土 Earth
Earth is what holds: the ground under the house, the pause between seasons, the person everyone calls when things fall apart.
Colour yellow, ochre, terracotta, sand · Shape square, flat, low, wide · Stems 戊 Wu (yang, the mountain), 己 Ji (yin, the field and the garden soil) · Branches 辰 Dragon, 戌 Dog, 丑 Ox, 未 Goat
In your home
Earth is the element of weight and surface. Clay and ceramics carry it: an unglazed bowl, a terracotta pot, tiles. Stone carries it: a slate floor, a granite counter, river pebbles in a dish. Then shape: low, square, wide things, a coffee table, a bench, a bed with a solid base. Then colour: the yellows and browns of soil and sand, warm neutrals, the colour of linen.
In the bagua, Earth governs the centre of the home, the place everything else turns around, and the southwest, the area of relationships, and the northeast, the area of knowledge and self-cultivation. A cluttered centre is the most common reason a home feels unsettled no matter how good the other rooms are. Clear it and the whole house exhales.
Earth rooms are rooms for staying: a bedroom, a kitchen table, the chair you read in. Earth is also what every other element needs underneath it. A Fire room without Earth is a bonfire; a Water room without Earth is a flood.
In your chart
戊 Wu is yang Earth, the mountain: steady, protective, slow to change its mind, a shelter for others and sometimes a wall. 己 Ji is yin Earth, the garden soil: nurturing, practical, worried about the weather, able to grow anything given time. Earth has four branches, one at the end of each season: 辰 Dragon, 未 Goat, 戌 Dog and 丑 Ox. That is why the classics say Earth lives at the turn of every season rather than in one.
If your Day Master is Earth, the reading asks what you are holding and whether anything is tending you. Earth needs Fire to warm it and Wood to work it; without them it is a mountain nobody climbs. Wu with support is the one who keeps the family and the business standing. Ji with support is the one who makes a house a home.
Relative to other Day Masters: for Metal, Earth is the Resource, the ore’s mother. For Water, Earth is Power, the banks that give a river a direction. For Wood, Earth is Wealth, the ground to grow in. For Fire, Earth is Output, what the fire leaves behind.
The cycle
- Fed by Fire. Ash becomes soil.
- Feeds Metal. Ore is found in the ground.
- Controls Water. Banks hold the river.
- Controlled by Wood. Roots break the ground.
Too much, too little
Too much Earth reads as a room that is hard to leave and hard to think in: heavy furniture, beige on beige, everything low, nothing moving. People in it feel safe, then slow, then stuck. The classics pair Earth with the spleen and with worry. Lighten it with Wood (a tall plant, a vertical line, green) or move it with Metal (a round mirror, a white surface, one clean object).
Too little Earth reads as a room you cannot settle in: glass, chrome, tall shapes, nowhere to put a cup down. The remedy is one solid low thing of clay or stone, square, at the centre of the room.
In a chart, strong Earth gives reliability and patience and can tip into inertia and over-worry. Weak Earth gives lightness and can tip into rootlessness. A reading says which, and what to add.
