水 Water

Water is what sinks, gathers and flows: rest, depth, memory, and the quiet intelligence that finds the way down the mountain.

In your home

Water is the element of movement without effort. It is literally water: a fountain, a bowl, an aquarium, the view of a river. It is glass and mirrors, which hold light the way a pond does. It is black and the deep blues, used as depth rather than darkness. And it is the meandering line: a curved path, a flowing pattern, an irregular shape that the eye follows rather than reads.

In the bagua, Water governs the north, the area of career and life path. The classics put the entrance of the ideal house on the water side, facing the open ground, because what flows in through the door is what the home lives on. A clear, well-lit north and a front door that opens fully are the first things we look at in any consultation.

Water rooms are rooms for rest and reflection: a bedroom, a bath, the corner with the reading lamp. Water in excess belongs nowhere; a bedroom with a fountain in it is a bedroom nobody sleeps in.

In your chart

壬 Ren is yang Water, the ocean: expansive, resourceful, generous, hard to contain and hard to read, carrying everyone along. 癸 Gui is yin Water, the rain and the dew: intuitive, gentle, persistent, reaching places nothing else can, and inclined to keep its own counsel. The branches 亥 Pig and 子 Rat carry Water in early and deep winter and in the hours around midnight.

If your Day Master is Water, the reading asks where you are going and what is giving you shape. Water needs Metal to replenish it and Earth to hold its banks; without banks it spreads thin, and without a source it dries. Ren with support moves whole organisations. Gui with support knows what everyone in the room is feeling.

Relative to other Day Masters: for Wood, Water is the Resource, the rain that grows it. For Fire, Water is Power, the limit that makes heat useful. For Earth, Water is Wealth, what the ground is for. For Metal, Water is Output, what flows from the rock.

The cycle

Too much, too little

Too much Water reads as a room that is beautiful and cold: dark walls, glass, mirrors facing mirrors, nothing to hold on to. People in it drift, lose track of time, and feel vaguely afraid without knowing why. The classics pair Water with the kidneys and with fear. Hold it with Earth (a square rug, clay, a low solid table) or grow it into something with Wood (a tall plant, green, a column).

Too little Water reads as a room with no depth: bright, busy, flat, every object shouting at the same volume. The remedy is one dark, still, reflective thing: a black bowl, a mirror placed where it shows something worth seeing, a single curve.

In a chart, strong Water gives wisdom and adaptability and can tip into restlessness and secrecy. Weak Water gives steadiness and can tip into a lack of imagination or of rest. A reading says which, and what to add.
