木 Wood

Wood is the push upward: the seed splitting the soil, the plan that becomes a year, the stubborn, hopeful reach toward light.

Colour green  ·  Shape tall, rectangular, columnar  ·  Stems 甲 Jia (yang, the tall tree), 乙 Yi (yin, the vine and the grass)  ·  Branches 寅 Tiger, 卯 Rabbit

In your home

Wood is the easiest element to see. Living plants carry it most purely, which is why a healthy plant by the door does more for a room than any ornament. Then timber: an oak table, a cane chair, unpainted floorboards. Then the shape of things: tall bookcases, vertical slats, columns, anything that draws the eye upward. Then colour: the greens of leaf and moss, and the soft blues that lean toward them.

In the bagua, Wood governs the east, the area of family and health, and the southeast, the area of wealth. A plant that thrives in the southeast corner of your living room is the oldest prosperity cure there is, and it works for the plainest reason: you are tending something that grows.

Wood rooms feel like mornings. They are rooms for starting things: a study, a breakfast table, a child’s room.

In your chart

Wood appears in a BaZi chart as two Heavenly Stems and two Earthly Branches. 甲 Jia is yang Wood, the tall tree: upright, principled, slow to bend and hard to move once rooted. 乙 Yi is yin Wood, the vine and the grass: flexible, persistent, finding a way around every wall. The branches 寅 Tiger and 卯 Rabbit carry Wood in the months of early spring and in the hours before and after dawn.

If your Day Master (the stem of your day pillar) is Wood, you are the tree. The reading looks at whether you have water to drink, earth to root in, and sunlight to grow toward, and whether there is too much metal around you, cutting you back before you have grown. A Jia person who has those things is a builder and a planner. A Yi person who has them is a diplomat who always arrives, just not by the straight road.

If your Day Master is another element, Wood plays a role relative to it. For a Fire person, Wood is the Resource, what feeds and teaches you. For an Earth person, Wood is Power, what disciplines you. For a Metal person, Wood is Wealth, what you act on. For a Water person, Wood is Output, what you make.

The cycle

Too much, too little

Too much Wood in a room reads as a jungle: every surface green, everything tall, no horizon. People in it feel pushed, restless, oddly irritable. The classics pair Wood with the liver and with anger, and a Wood-heavy room does have a temper. Add Metal to prune it (a round brass tray, a white wall, a single clean line) or Fire to spend it (warm light, a candle, a touch of red).

Too little Wood reads as a room nothing grows in: all stone, all grey, all straight lines at knee height. The remedy is one living thing you will actually keep alive, placed where you see it first.

In a chart, strong Wood gives drive and vision and can tip into stubbornness and over-planning. Weak Wood gives adaptability and can tip into indecision. A reading says which, and what to add.
