火 Fire

Fire is what radiates outward: warmth, light, attention, the moment a thing becomes visible to others.

Colour red, orange, bright purple  ·  Shape triangular, pointed, flame-like  ·  Stems 丙 Bing (yang, the sun), 丁 Ding (yin, the lamp and the candle)  ·  Branches 巳 Snake, 午 Horse

In your home

Fire is light first, before it is colour. A room’s Fire is its lamps, its candles, the sun through a south window, a hearth if you are lucky enough to have one. Then it is red and its neighbours, used sparingly: a lacquered box, a single cushion, a painting with heat in it. Then shape: anything that rises to a point, a pyramid lamp, a peaked roof, a triangle in a pattern.

In the bagua, Fire governs the south, the area of fame and reputation: how you are seen. A dark, cold south wall is a common reason a home feels overlooked. Warm light there, and a little red, changes how people feel when they arrive.

Fire rooms are rooms for being with people: a dining table under a low warm lamp, a living room that gathers at night. Fire belongs in moderation in a bedroom. A bedroom’s job is Water and Earth: rest and holding.

In your chart

丙 Bing is yang Fire, the sun: generous, open, impossible to ignore, warming everyone equally and sometimes burning the ones closest. 丁 Ding is yin Fire, the lamp: focused, perceptive, lighting one thing at a time, and prone to flicker when the room is draughty. The branches 巳 Snake and 午 Horse carry Fire in early and high summer and in the hours around midday.

If your Day Master is Fire, the reading asks what you are burning. A Fire person needs Wood to feed it and enough Water to be kept in bounds. Bing with support is a leader people are glad to follow. Ding with support is the thinker in the corner whom everyone eventually asks.

Relative to other Day Masters: for Earth, Fire is the Resource, what nourishes. For Metal, Fire is Power, the discipline that forges. For Water, Fire is Wealth, what you pursue. For Wood, Fire is Output, what you express and create.

The cycle

Too much, too little

Too much Fire reads as a room that never rests: red walls, spotlights, sharp angles, a television that is always on. People in it talk too loud and sleep badly. The classics pair Fire with the heart and with joy that tips into agitation. Cool it with Water (a mirror, a dark blue, a bowl of still water, a curve) or ground it with Earth (clay, stone, a low square table).

Too little Fire reads as a beautiful room no one wants to sit in: all grey and stone, lit from above, cold in the evening. The remedy is almost always a lamp at eye height with a warm bulb, and one object that is honestly red.

In a chart, strong Fire gives charisma and drive and can tip into impatience and burnout. Weak Fire gives sensitivity and can tip into a life lived in other people’s light. A reading says which, and what to add.
